my last day

February 27th, 2008 / No Comments » / by S. Elie

Today is the last day of my maternity leave. My son is in daycare for a couple of hours today just to get comfortable with his new daytime caretakers. I was able to keep him home for a couple of weeks longer than his sister. I had to return to work when she was 6 weeks old, with him I managed to stay at home for 10 weeks.

the ultimate test

February 27th, 2008 / No Comments » / by S. Elie

Today is my last day of maternity leave. My wallet and bills are telling me that I need to get back to work, ASAP. While I’m not looking forward to the “work” part, I am looking forward to adult communication. Carrying on a conversation with a 10 week old is a bit one-sided. And I can’t even get a word in with my jabber box of a 2 year old.

So here is where the test comes in. I know have to figure out how to balance, my 2-year old, 10-month old, full-time job, husband, household and my online business and ventures.

I keep telling myself that the craziness is temporary. That all the hard work will payoff and I will become financially independent.

So right now it’s a juggling act, all I have to do is catch the balls.

is it selfish?

February 22nd, 2008 / No Comments » / by S. Elie

On Thursday my husband and I went to pick up our weekly dinners from Super Suppers. Have you heard of them, it’s really great they prepare your meals for you and all you have to do is cook them? Perfect for any family that is always on the go and wants to eat healthy then greasy fast food.

I was waiting by the car and feeding the baby when we were approached by a guy, can’t say if he was homeless or not, but he’s clothes were clean. He asked me for some money, and I said I didn’t have any cash. As he walked away he said, “Fine be selfish then.”

<!–more–>

I was appalled.

How is it selfish for not wanting to give away the money I worked hard for? I don’t know him. Who’s to say he isn’t going to throw the money away on cigarettes or alcohol. I don’t know what his situation was, but my situation is that I have two kids to feed, a mortgage to pay for and a car payment to make. I don’t have money to spare and I shouldn’t feel obligated just because you ask.

It’s not selfish.

Every year I do what I can to help, donating clothes and toys my children out grow. Giving away clothes that I can no longer wear. Dropping off food during food drives. I do my part the best way I can.

I think people are becoming way to liberal they way they ask for money and donations. A couple of years ago my husband was approached by a man asking for $20. During a cold winter in Seattle my cousin gave his old leather jacket to a homeless man on the street and another guy asked for the one off his back.

It’s not selfish to keep your money. It’s rude for someone to EXPECT you to give it away.

Spanx, are you wearing them?

February 22nd, 2008 / 3 Comments » / by S. Elie

I have to be honest I never even heard of Spanx until just a couple of months ago. Jessica Alba mentioned she wore them on the Tyra Banks show. So now I have found myself scouring the internet to find some for myself. I believe Spanx could be the answer to my unwanted post partum bump.

In case you’re just as clueless as I am Spanx are supreme body shapers designed to fit under the tightest of clothes. To give you a smooth, stress free figure.

If you live in LA and listen to Ryan Seacrest on 102.7 KIIS FM then you would have heard him talk about Spanx for the last couple of days. The topic came up when he asked his listening audience what questions he should ask the stars on the red carpet this Sunday at the Oscars.

my daughter regressed…

February 20th, 2008 / No Comments » / by S. Elie

Okay so she technically wasn’t potty trained, but she was almost there. She would use the potty at school with no problem. I guess peer pressure is just as strong among two year olds, as it is with teenagers. Because when she is at home she refused to use it.

Now with the birth of our son, things have only gotten worse. She still doesn’t go at home, but now she stopped using the potty at school.

I hope we get potty trained soon.

are your bottles bpa free?

February 17th, 2008 / No Comments » / by S. Elie

After looking at a report on ABC news broadcast we decided to throw out our Avent bottles and get the BPA free Born Free bottles. They’re a bit more costly nonetheless we decided the value outweighed the risks.

What the heck is BPA?
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical found inside some beverage containers, as well as our babies bottles. According to ABCnews.com a report evealed that heating, infant bottles exposes this chemical that has been connected to chubbiness, diabetes furthermore civilization drawbacks lab animals.

parenting classes for grandma

February 10th, 2008 / 1 Comment » / by S. Elie

Did you know that back in the day cigarettes were given to pregnant woman to calm their nerves? Good thing times have changed!

Over the holidays a debate arose in our house about grandparents being asked to take parenting classes to help raise their own grandchildren. While I haven’t suggested it to my own parents I’m not against the notion. In fact, I would encourage all caretakers to take some form of parenting class just so they are up-to-date on new philosophies and parenting techniques. And I’m not the only one; psychologists suggest bringing grandparents to parenting classes.

Before I get slammed by every grandma and papa here me out; in know way am I suggesting that you are unfit to raise your grandchildren or discounting your experience as a parent. I’m not judging your parenting skills or saying you’re a bad grandparent. I feel that we all do what we can with the information we have. I’m sure those mom’s who were prescribed cigarettes never would have taken a puff if they knew they could harm their unborn babies.
