5 creative toilet training tips
My daughter is 2 ½ years old and we are having a hard time getting her potty trained. We were getting close, but the birth of my son has made her revert. “Back to the drawing board,” we go.
The first tip is actually my own. Make sure your child is ready to transition. Does she tell you when she needs to go?
Number One: Sing
There is a wonder potty training CD called Potty Animal: Funny Songs About Potty Training. One of the songs created by Dr Sonna is, “I Need My Pot.” And it goes a little something like this.
I Need My Pot
I just drank some water.
There’s no doubt,
Right below my tummy
It’s hiding out.
I need my pot.
Hey, lookie there!
It’s coming out!
Number Two: Dance
Dance your way to the potty with your child, it will help calm your baby and give them a chance to show off their dance moves.
Number Three: Draw
If you child is like mine, drawing pictures is a big deal and can distract her from the stress of using the potty.
Number four: Act
At this age children love to mimic what they see. Let your child watch you use the toilet. If that doesn’t work you may want to try one of the “potty dolls” that have been popping up in toy stores. There is even a “Potty Monkey” with a timer, which requests kids to use the potty every 30 to 90 minutes.
We are going out of town this weekend but next weekend I vow to sit down with my daughter and really focus on potty training. Wish me luck!
