thankful friday
November 21st, 2008 / 4 Comments » / by S. Elie
This week I received some great products to review, I received a steady flow of sells at my baby boutique, I received a really cool bag from flash bags (look for the review next week), and I met a bunch of new people on twitter. I had a great talk with Michele @ integratedmother.com. I was invited to contribute on a really cool community blog and have some other opportunities in the works. It’s been a good week.
That is not why I’m calling today Thankful Friday. As most of my twitter friends know my father was in a car accident during the week. Today is the first day I saw the pictures of his car. I mean sure he described the accident which was scary in itself. But seeing the actual images of the accident made it really hit home.
if I had a crystal ball…
September 16th, 2008 / 3 Comments » / by S. Elie
I couldn’t sleep last night so I wrote down what I was thinking to try and clear my head. This is what I was thinking…
It’s 2:15 and I’m alone on the sofa and just shut down my computer 15 minutes ago promising to go to bed but instead I’m writing, pen and paper writing this blog post.
I’m stressed out to the core with life crap that I don’t want to really bore anyone with. But seriously when will stuff start to turn around. Will things every go the way I want them to. Why does life have to be so hard sometimes?
I’m worried about the future of my family; I’m concerned about the state of the country. Can you believe this is the worst housing market since the depression? How bad will things get before they start to get better?
It 3:00 am and I’m pondering what I would have done differently if I had a crystal ball and could go back in time.

1 sugar free red bull
egg, turkey bacon and cheese sandwich on whole wheat bread
Lunch
2 chocolate chip cookies
a little milk
Dinner
Kung Pao Shrimp (atleast it was shrimp)
Chicken Fried Rice
Egg Drop Soup
Dessert
A glazed donut, okay maybe two.
I’m not going to like what the scale has to say in the morning.
container syndrome, are you putting your baby at risk?
August 19th, 2008 / 4 Comments » / by S. Elie
Car carriers, strollers, swings and bouncers the modern conveniences of busy mothers are now linked to causing developmental delays in our children. I never heard of container syndrome until today. The term was coined by researchers who discovered developmental delays in children who are in “containers” for a considerable amount of time.
These “containers” or modern conveniences put a considerable amount of pressure on the back of babies heads, which can cause flattened skull or in more severe cases development delays.
“When a baby is strapped in the container, his neck is immobilized, preventing him from using all the muscles needed to grow normally. This can delay crawling, walking, sitting or even speaking.”
A 2006 study found that 22 percent of babies who slept on their backs had some delays but at the same time has also reduced the incidence of SIDS b 50 percent. So what does that mean?
Try to limit or prevent the use of car carriers, strollers, swings and bouncers to 3 hours a day and allow your baby plenty of tummy time 2 hours at least.
I used all of the “containers” with both my kids so who knows how strong this research is. My daughter walked just shy of her 1st birthday and crawled at 6 months. My son held his head up almost since they day he was born, crawled at 5 months and is on his way to walking and he’s not even 8 months old. He never really liked the swing and hated the bouncer so we have stopped using both for him. And my daughter stopped using the swing once she was able to crawl.
Just to be on the safe side they suggest carrying your baby rather than haul them around in the car seat carrier. I never liked them myself; they were too bulky and got extremely heavy. So I found myself toting my son in baby carriers, baby wraps and slings. Wearing your baby is convenient for mom as it leaves your hands free and great for baby as it gives them a chance to look around and explore, building muscle tone.
Is this study enough for you to toss out the containers of modern parenting?

new zealand court orders name change for 9-year old
July 24th, 2008 / Comments Off / by S. Elie
Why would anyone name their child, Talula Does the Hula? I can only imagine how much teasing can come out of a name like that. It took a judge, not the parents, to order a name change during a custody battle for the child. The girl whose new name is not being revealed was so embarrassed about her name she would ask people to call her, “K” instead. In fact, her own best friend had no idea what her real name was.
New Zealand doesn’t allow names that would cause offense to a reasonable person, so they don’t allow Fish and Chips, Sex Fruit, Yeah Detroit, and now Talula Does the Hula. Interesting enough you can name your child, Violence. Hmm, let’s try it. “Come here, Violence,” or “Violence, get over here.”
Would that be a girls or boys name?

5 creative toilet training tips
March 12th, 2008 / 1 Comment » / by S. Elie
My daughter is 2 ½ years old and we are having a hard time getting her potty trained. We were getting close, but the birth of my son has made her revert. “Back to the drawing board,” we go.
The first tip is actually my own. Make sure your child is ready to transition. Does she tell you when she needs to go?
Number One: Sing
There is a wonder potty training CD called Potty Animal: Funny Songs About Potty Training. One of the songs created by Dr Sonna is, “I Need My Pot.” And it goes a little something like this.
I Need My Pot
I just drank some water.
There’s no doubt,
Right below my tummy
It’s hiding out.
I need my pot.
Hey, lookie there!
It’s coming out!
Number Two: Dance
Dance your way to the potty with your child, it will help calm your baby and give them a chance to show off their dance moves.
how to lose the baby weight
December 12th, 2007 / Comments Off / by S. Elie
With the impending arrival of my son, it got me to thinking, how am I ever going to get my figure back and how long will it take. I already know what the rule is.
It took 9 months to put the wait on, so plan at least that long to get the weight back off.
I also know that with my first child I never really lost “all” the weight a couple of pounds still lingered and wandered into the next pregnancy. But this time it’s different. We don’t plan on having any more children so now I can “invest” in getting my figure back, and I’m excited about it.
But where do I start? It’s time to some investigating and I wanted to share with everyone what I found.
When I go to the mall in the morning I see a group of women with their babies in strollers exercising together. They were part of the work out program Stroller Strides.
Stroller Strides was started by a mom just like us who no longer had time to go to the gym and decided to workout outdoors with her son in tow in his stroller. She created a series of exercises that got her back into shape and wanted to share her secrets with other busy moms. Stroller Strides was born. You can sign up for a free class to see if Stroller Strides is right for you. To check for classes in your area go to http://www.strollerstrides.com/.
5 nursing products we love
November 9th, 2007 / Comments Off / by S. Elie
My Brest Friend
This isn’t your ordinary nursing pillow. I used this one for the first few months with my daughter. I love the slight curve of the pillow and the how it securely fastens around the waste. This pillow made it a lot easier to nurse my daughter and puts your baby in the most ideal position to nurse.
On a side note my husband even used the pillow. He liked to lay my daughter on the pillow and let her sleep on his lap so he could use both his hands to wok on the computer. To learn more about this pillow go to www.mybrestfriend.com.
Boppy Pillow
We pulled this pillow out last week to get ready for the baby. My 2-year old has already laid claim on it, so we may have a little problem when the baby comes. We actually didn’t use this pillow at first; I didn’t use it when nursing. To find locations that sell the Boppy Pillow go to www.boppy.com.
We got the most of this pillow when my daughter was a little older. We would set her in the pillow to feed her while we were getting ready for work. I would definitely recommend this pillow.
Madela Breast Pump
This is a pricey breast pump but if you’re planning on nursing and pumping for more than a couple of months it’s worth the buy. You can often find used pumps for sale; just make sure you replace the little parts with brand new ones. More information is available about the Madela breast pump at www.madela.com.
