five little mice sittin’ in a tree
With Christmas just around the corner, I am stuck trying to decide if we should get a Christmas tree this year. My husband and I have lived together for 9 years and have only had a Christmas for two of them. Pathetic I know. But I have a good excuse; we are almost always out of town for the Holiday.
I still can’t get last year’s tree adventure out of my mind.
Last year we decided it was time to get a tree we were staying home this year because I was expecting our son any day. Plus our daughter was getting older and I just knew she would have fun decorating the tree and watching the lights. So we went to the Tree Farm and let her pick out the tree. She was so excited. I was excited and so was my husband.
So we get the tree home safely and up the stairs and then the drama starts. I bet you are wondering what happened? Okay, nobody fell down the stairs and no one got hurt. Well…
My husband had just finished hammering in the stand on our front balcony. We share it with another condo unit. We are all standing around watching Bizzie Princess, the neighbor, her son and I. My husband props up the tree.
Me: What’s that? (kind of yelling)
We all look down at the little (okay not that little) white things on the ground. As we lean in closer we all realize the little white things are baby MICE!
Me: Eww (screaming)
Everyone screaming!
I grab my daughter, and slam the front door. My neighbor does the same. And where is my hubby? At the bottom of the stairs completely grossed out. He was waving his hands around, shaking about wondering if one is on his jacket. After all he did carry the tree upstairs.
I’m eight months pregnant so that is my easy pass out of the situation, my husband is left to handle everything. But even if I wasn’t it would still be up to him. There were about five mice on our front balcony; their eyes were still closed so they must have been recently born. Our neighbor’s husband starts helping my hubby collect the mice and take the tree downstairs. They shake the tree more and another MOUSE falls out! My daughter and I are screaming upstairs from the window. Well I am, she’s just yelling along with me.
I immediately call the Tree Farm and tell them the story, they were actually laughing about it. At first they didn’t want to accept the return, they claimed it never happened before. Just our luck right?
My husband takes the tree back to the farm and they actually ask if we want another one. Um yeah no thanks!
So last year our Christmas tree was our artificial plant sitting in the corner with some lights on it. Pathetic I know.
But this year, I’m torn. Tree or no tree, there are so many reasons not to.
I have an 11 month old curious speed racer walking around the house that puts everything in his mouth and will probably enjoy me chasing after him every time he gets too close to the tree.
1. I have an 11 months old curious speed racer that will probably pull on the tree and knock it down.
2. I have an 11 month old curious speed racer walking around
3. I would have crazy dreams about mice wondering around in my house while we sleep
I was actually planning on getting an artificial tree this year, until I saw the prices. Wow, I didn’t realize they were so expensive. But now with my 11 month old running around the house I don’t know where I can safely put a Christmas tree.
I would hate for my Bizzie Princess to miss out on the tree decorating experience again, she loves the lights. If you have any suggestions, please leave us a comment.

I am there with you Bizzie…not at all thrilled about the tree thing either. I have never been a fan of them. Now with my 18mo old walking hurricane, I am not sure if it is a good idea. We’ll see.
