We have a good ol', pre-lit fake one that we have been using for several years now. It's pretty, it lights up and doesn't leave a mess of needles everywhere. No watering, no worrying about it drying out and it folds back up easily when we are finished. I have never been a fan of them. Now with my 18mo old walking hurricane, I am not sure if it is a good idea. Do you have a room you could block off with a baby gate to put the tree in? I've also heard of people putting their tree inside a playpen to keep out busy little ones. You could always pick one out at a store at the very last minute and just have it up for a day or two. We did that a while back, and got a close out tree for $5 at Home Depot on Christmas Eve.
