Mompreneur Wellness helps entrepreneurial moms, women who are actively balancing child-rearing with their small business goals to leverage healthy eating to fuel their success in their business and home life. Cydney Smith, the Mompreneur’s Health Coach supports mompreneurs through private coaching, group programs, and an online community (launching January 2010).
What inspired you to start your business?
All the amazingly creative and dynamic moms out there who are living off the cuff. You know, the ones who are consciously creating their own rhythm in life. They are trying to raise a healthy family, in a mindful way, and create a career that supports their passions. I want to support these women to live an authentic life, and I do this through my background in nutrition and life coaching.
How long have you been in business?
I’ve been in business for 2 1/2 years, but have recently relaunched my health coaching business to support the unique needs of entrepreneurial moms. As a business owner of 2 previous businesses, I found that I understood the unique needs of the mom trying to do it all.
What did you do in your past work life?
I was a professor in environmental studies at a small Vermont College. I co-founded a Dogsledding adventure business in the Green Mountains, and co-owned a nationally recognized life coaching and mentoring program for young adults.
Describe your ideal workday.
Not sure about this yet! It depends on so many things. Sometimes, when I am home and I have a messy house, laundry and grocery shopping to do, it may be a 12 hour day at the office, with hired help pulling it all together back at the ranch.
I enjoy getting up at 5am before anyone else, doing some yoga, writing and drinking a cup of coffee. Then making a healthy breakfast for the kids, taking them to school and getting 5 projects/tasks off of my work to-do list before pick-up at 3:00. Then I’d go home, relax and laugh and play with my girls, make dinner and have relaxing evening with my husband.
It’s not to far from that most days. Fill in the long pauses between sentences with a blackberry and laundry and its a little more realistic.
What have been some of your major successes?
Staying home with my kids for 9 years, while creating meaningful businesses. Did i say being a stay at home mom? That tops it all.
What have been some of your major challenges?
Finding a way to hold the energy of my family and home in a way that supports my values. Keeping a regular schedule for the benefit of my children. Reminding myself that I want the life I’ve created, and to spend time with my children, as much – if not more- then I want an amazing successful business. Understanding how to take the higher road.
On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?
I believe the world is a big place, and that we have infinite love in our heart. When I am taking care of myself, and truly following my inner voice, I believe I am giving my two daughters the power to always be true to their own vision as well.
Do you have a motivational quote?
“Let the beauty of what you love be what you do.” Rumi
What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?
No secret. I try to establish a range of tolerance for ups and downs and stay in that range. I DO NOT visualize a balancing act.
If there was one piece of advice you could give to your children about running a successful business, what would it be?
Breath. Find your center and move with an open heart.
Do you have a favorite business tool and/or resource?
Blackberry.
What is next for your business?
I’m launching an online community in January 2010. Writing a book and offering retreats and workshops.
