wordless wednesday – my new sigma 30mm 1.4

by Stephanie Elie on February 10, 2010

Really is there anymore to say? Today UPS dropped off my new Sigma 30mm 1.4 lens, the one I’ve been coveting for the last few months. I wound up selling two lenses and a snazzy camera bag just to get this lens. So when I got home what did I do? Of course I opened the package and started taking pictures of the kids. mom entrepreneur interview: laura @ bookclubs4boys

by Stephanie Elie on February 9, 2010

Mom Entrepreneur: Laura
Business: Bookclubs4boys
Website: Bookclubs4boys.blogspot.com

I share FREE action oriented book club ideas on my blog/site. I offer suggestions for how to host a book club for reluctant readers.

What inspired you to start your business?
My oldest son was struggling as a reader. In first grade his teacher recommended he repeat the grade because of his poor reading skills. I made it my “mommy mission” to get him reading without holding him back. I started a book club for him as a way to make reading fun and reward his hard work. By the end of summer he was reading well enough to advance to second grade. After 2 years he was reading WELL beyond his grade level. The funny thing is- he still doesn’t like to read! The only motivation I have found to get him to read and keep reading is hosting a book club. I knew I found a secret weapon to helping boys connect to books and I wanted to share my ideas with other families with similar struggles.
Everything is offered Free on my site- I make money off of advertising.

How long have you been in business?
One year

What did you do in your past work life?
I’ve worked as a Preschool teacher and before children… an ASL interpreter.

i heart faces – i heart kisses

by Stephanie Elie on February 8, 2010

This week’s photo challenge theme is “We Heart Kisses” and ironically I don’t have that many pictures of people, kids, or anyone kissing. I had to go WAY back, so far back it was taking with a point and shoot before I even had a DSLR. This photo is of Bizzie Princess and her Daddy. I love it!

20 moms to follow on twitter

by Stephanie Elie on February 8, 2010

This guest post was written by Christine Howell, a stay at home mother and freelancer who often writes about education for Online College Guru, a directory of online colleges.

If you’ve got a few little ones of your own, you might find it nice just to see what other moms are going through. There’s something to be said about the bonds that mothers can form with one another because they all struggle in some way to keep their children happy while maintaining their own sanity. Something that you might think about as a mom, a mom-to-be, or just someone who likes moms is to follow some mothers on Twitter. That way you can see what others are going through on a day to day basis and try to pick up on ways to improve your own parenting. Here are 25 amazing moms to learn from:

@DebMomOf3: As you might have guess, Deb is a mother of three girls. She is unemployed, but as we all know, kids are a full time job. She has an astounding 5,400+ followers on Twitter, making this Michigan mom the talk of the social network scene.

@blendedfamily: This mother of a blended family has a combination of kids to deal with. She hasn’t Tweeted in awhile, but her 3,600+ followers indicate that she’s at least something to look at. She has a website as well that is devoted to living as a blended family, and you can see the link there on her profile.

@thriftymom63: This mom is a bit of a nomad, moving just about anywhere and sharing secrets about living on a budget. She uses her Twitter account to share her savings ideas with people so that they may have a frugal life as well. With over 2,600 followers, this mom must really know her stuff.

@opus_6: This Orange County mother is followed by more than 2,200 people every day on Twitter. She has over 4,000 Tweets, which goes to show how avid she is about conversing with people. She deems herself a soccer mom, and she is highly patriotic in her posts and overall views.

@ageekmom: Shannon is a Texan with a bit of an eclectic personality. She has a toddler, and she exists as a combination of a Southern girl and a bit of a nerd all rolled into one. She has more than 2,100 followers on Twitter and a whopping 11,000 (gasp!) Tweets to her name. Needless to say, she’ll keep you entertained.
